Shi Loc'd In

Have you notice that everyone around you is getting or wanting locs? From, the many different sizes to all types of lengths.

Do you want to start your loc journey, but not sure yet on how to start?Well after this read, I hope to make your decision that much easier.

The History

The word locs comes from the word dreadlocks, which is short for the different types and forms of locks. Many also dont know that dreadlocks started back in Africa. They, have been around since 2500 BC. Dreadlocks also have roots in Aztec, Greek, Buddhist, and Rastafari cultures.

Why Locs?

Well to most of us we choose them for spiritual reasons. As with other's it maybe for political beliefs or following a trend. But no matter what, everyone cherishes their locs. When it comes to dreadlocks no matter which form you choose, each journey is unique and never the same.

Locs are versatile. You can wear them in updos, freestyle, shave sides and even braid and twist styles. If you like to color from time to time, you can color your locs too.

How Should I Start?

Locs are formed using your hair strands that become matted over time. In fact, if you refrain from combing your hair for a long period of time. Your hair will eventually lock on its own. This approach is called free forming.

Interlocking

Interlocking is another way to start locs. Many love this method because it helps to keep their locs fresh with a neat look. A crochet tool or even your fingers may be used to thread (no needle or thread is used) locs through existing loc to create a stronger base.

Comb Coils

This method is done so by using a thin comb to achieve curly coils all over. Comb coils is a normal go to, to achieving beautiful healthy locs. Your hair must be 2 to 3 inches for this method.

Two Strand Twist

Two Strand Twist method is another great way to loc your hair. This way you will achieve a thicker loc depending on size. Short or long hair is excellent for this.

Backcomb Method

This is a popular method for individuals with looser curl patterns or straight hair. Carve out a section of your hair and hold the section of hair tight and straight. Then, run your hair from root to tip using the comb. You are now creating a tease look which is making the hair look kinky. You repeat this process for each section until you have kinky looking locs all over before palm rolling. This method is not for anyone with kinky or curly hair.

Instant Locs

The Instant loc method is another way to start your loc journey. This method consists of your natural hair being crochet over and over until it forms a loc. This can also be used for anyone with straight hair as well after backcombing is done.

Braid Locs

This method is just as the two strand twist method, but using three strands instead of two. It gives your hair a stronger base as well as giving it a more tight uniform looked. For this it will require your hair to be 3 to 4 inches long.

How Long to Loc

It normally takes anywhere for 90 to 180 days for locs to start the locking process. Please note that every loc journey is different, so don't expect your hair to loc like your neighbors.

Different Types of Locs

  • Braidlocs

  • Twistlocs

  • Sisterlock/Brotherlocks

  • Microlocs

  • Traditional locs

  • Loc Extensions

The prices to start your journey can range anywhere from $100 to $2400

Loc Care

Locs do require maintenance. The purpose of caring for your locs is to prevent damage and to protect.

Take care of your scalp. Here, a good oil is your best friend. Not sure what oil to use? Castor Oil or my Royal Growth Oil. You can purchase in my online store.

Retwist or Retie your locs. Always stay up on your regular loc appointments to ensure a successful loc journey.

Bedtime Routine. Make sure every night before bed, you are using a satin bonnet or satin scarf over your locs. To prevent dirt and debris. This also helps minimize frizz.

Saltwater Spray. Is another loc secret. Its a natural ingredient to help your hair loc faster. It is also a fantastic way to tighten and rejuvenate your locs. You can also add a small amount of apple cider vinegar too. This also helps to prevent smelly locs.

To close I will end with saying. Locs are rich in history and your locs will require TLC. So be prepared to invest in the health and quality of your loc journey. Caring for your locs will reduce the risk of scalp inflammation and irritation. Note-- that not every loc journey is the same, so you must trust your process only. When you compare, you scare.
